Well, for one thing, [...] you're like us, except that you have stripes and no spots. Sisi ni sawa!
―Madoa to Shalo

Madoa is a female hyena and a member of Kubariki's Clan. She is the youngest daughter of Kubariki and Mlinzi, the younger sister of Jasiri and Asante, and the maternal cousin of Wema and Tunu.

The top tufts of fur on her head are light purple. She has brown eyes which are encircled by grey fur. Her inner ears are pink.

Personality[]

Madoa is a rather skeptical hyena who is hesitant to believe that lions and hyenas can be friends. She is graceful in admitting when she is wrong, and enjoys seeing her sister happy. She is also seen as a very caring and nurturing hyena, often placing the needs of the younger hyenas above her own when there is a problem.

The Rogue Hyena[]

Jasiri and her family settle outside the den, watching Tunu and Wema play tag. Glancing at Madoa, Jasiri asks if she remembers when they played like that, and nodding, she comments that it was a lot of fun. Wema and Tunu then approach them, requesting for them to play with them, and Jasiri replies that they're coming. She, Madoa, and Asante walk up to the cubs, and Madoa questions what they want to play, to which Wema pleads for hide and seek. Agreeing, Jasiri leads them to a large bush, questioning which one of them wants to be it first. Both of them wish to be it, and she tells them to go hide while she and her sisters count to ten. After Shinda and Shinuni inform the clan of a distressed animal in the Outlands, they set out to find it, and Madoa asks where the sound is coming from. In response, Shinuni says that it was coming from the cliffs. Soon, they arrive at a cliffside to find a male striped hyena badly injured, scarred and bloodied with a broken leg. The hyena, wary of Kubariki's Clan, snarls at them and tries to attack Kubariki and Mlinzi, and ignoring the murmurs spoken by her sisters, Jasiri approaches him, assuring that they won't hurt him and are only here to help.

He demands why he should have a reason to trust them, but Madoa states that he's like them, the single difference being him possessing stripes and no spots. She utters the phrase "Sisi ni sawa," which Jasiri translates to "we're the same." The striped hyena, putting two and two together, figures out that he is indeed the same of them, earning the approval of the sisters, and he finally agrees to the clan's help. Madoa asks how he got hurt, to which he admits to slipping off the top of a cliff and not remembering much after that. When Jasiri explains that they live in the Pride Lands, the hyena questions if he's welcome there, and Madoa assures him that he's safe with them. Gently, Jasiri and Kubariki nudge the striped hyena onto the backs of Mlinzi, Shinda, and Shinuni, with Madoa and Asante helping to stabilize him. One week later, Madoa watches as the hyena, revealing his name to be Shalo, departs.
